Parameterized complexity of firefighting

چکیده
The Firefighter problem is to place firefighters on the vertices of a graph to prevent a fire with known starting point from lighting up the entire graph. In each time step, a firefighter may be placed on an unburned vertex, permanently protecting it, and the fire spreads to all neighboring unprotected vertices of burning vertices. The goal is to let as few vertices burn as possible. This problem is known to be NP-complete, even when restricted to trees of maximum degree three. Initial study showed the Firefighter problem to be fixed-parameter tractable on trees in various parameterizations. In this paper, we consider a generalization of this problem, where at each time step b ≥ 1 firefighters can be deployed. Our results answer several open questions raised by Cai et al. [8]. We show that this problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the number of saved vertices, protected vertices, and burned vertices. We also investigate several combined parameterizations for which the problem is fixed-parameter tractable. Some of our algorithms improve on previously known algorithms. We also establish lower bounds to polynomial kernelization.

On Structural Parameterizations of Firefighting
The Firefighting problem is defined as follows. At time t = 0, a fire breaks out at a vertex of a graph. At each time step t > 0, a firefighter permanently defends (protects) an unburned vertex, and the fire then spread to all undefended neighbors from the vertices on fire. This process stops when the fire cannot spread anymore. The goal is to find a sequence of vertices for the firefighter tha...
متن کاملSaving Critical Nodes with Firefighters is FPT
We consider the problem of firefighting to save a critical subset of nodes. The firefighting game is a turn-based game played on a graph, where the fire spreads to vertices in a breadth-first manner from a source, and firefighters can be placed on yet unburnt vertices on alternate rounds to block the fire. In this work, we consider the problem of saving a critical subset of nodes from catching ...
متن کاملPolitician's Firefighting
Firefighting is a combinatorial optimization problem on graphs that models the problem of determining the optimal strategy to contain a fire and save as much (trees, houses, etc.) from the fire as possible. We study a new version of firefighting, which we call Politician’s Firefighting and which exhibits more locality than the classical one-firefighter version. We prove that this locality allow...

متن کاملADAPTIVE FUZZY TRACKING CONTROL FOR A CLASS OF PERTURBED NONLINEARLY PARAMETERIZED SYSTEMS USING MINIMAL LEARNING PARAMETERS ALGORITHM
In this paper, an adaptive fuzzy tracking control approach is proposed for a class of single-inputsingle-output (SISO) nonlinear systems in which the unknown continuous functions may be nonlinearlyparameterized. During the controller design procedure, the fuzzy logic systems (FLS) in Mamdani type are applied to approximate the unknown continuous functions, and then, based on the minimal learnin...
